Our special little boy Tyler was born on 11th august 2003, 6lb 15oz at the womans hospital liverpool. We then knew Tyler was born with Down's syndrome and heart complications. Tyler had his first full open surgery to repair 2 holes in the valves of his heart at 3 months old. He recovered well and was able to come home. Unfortunately at a routine cardiac check at alder hey hospital a few months later the doctors found a narrowing artery, and Tyler went back on the waiting list for the second time. Tyler had his second full open heart surgery at 2 years old, the op was another success an tyler recovered well and started nursery in septermber 2007.
Tyler continued to grow into a happy energetic little boy, who warmed the hearts of every person he met.
In december 2008 Tyler took a strange turn and his body shut down, doctors unknown to the cause of tyler's illness , pumped his little body full of fluids and antibiotics incase of any hidden infections. Tyler slowly got his health back and once again was allowed to come home.
Tyler started having strange seizures in 2009, and had to undergo tests in alder hey to confirm the possibility of him having epilepsy. He did not have epilepsy , yet the seizures continued.. On August 1st Tyler was playing happily in the garden with his yonger brothers Ethan an Harvey, when he came to me an said "mummy i feel sick." Tyler rested on our sofa and thats where he stayed until the next day only waking for drinks, he seems like he had a 24hr bug, we couldnt have been more wrong !!
Sunday 2nd August at 11.30am , Tyler woke askin for a drink, i walked into the kitchen to refill his water bottle , when i heard his dad Rob , screaming for me to ring an ambulance, Tyler couldnt breath! Rob checked for things stuck in his throat, but it was clear... The 999 services went through resuss steps with rob over the phone , by this time Tyler was already turning blue. Praying for paramedics to hurry , them few minutes felt like a life time.
Rob held Tyler trying desperately to get some signs of life from Tyler, we then saw the rest of Tylers life drain from his deep blue eyes.
He was taken to the nearest hospital where they tryed everything they could for over an hour to revive Tyler, he regained a heart beat after 1 hour an 4 mins.
Tyler was transfered to Alder Hey I.C.U ward, where the doctors warned us about possible brain damage and Tyler had to for a brain scan before they could carry on, Tyler was pumped with over the maximum dose of adrenaline and other meds just to keep his heart beating. With the oxygen flowing straight into his tiny lifeless body, Tyler was taken for a brain scan. All we could do was sit and pray to god for help in saving our precious little boy.
The brain scan confirmed the doctors worst fears and they then told us Tyler was totally brain dead, even the main stem of his brain was severely damaged from the heart attack, our precious, happy little boy was now just a small helpless little body kept alive by machines.
Doctors then told me i had a few hours to make the last fatal decision in turning off the life support machines or they would have to do it . Know mother should ever have to make that kind of decision, the doctors explained to me that the moving chest and the beating heart i could see and feel under my hand was only the medication and the life support machines. I understood it was only the adrenaline and the machines keepin him alive but his tiny heart , which caused so much problems in the beginning was the only thing left working!!!
Tyler was pronounced dead monday 3rd August at 8.35pm
Just a week before his 6th birthday.
Tyler you will always be with me, and the rest of our family!
